Portage Lakes Fishing Report

Portage Lakes Fishing Report

We took our maiden voyage yesterday out onto Portage Lakes. On a bright, sunny, 65 – 70 degree day there were many boats out there with us. The water ranged from 58 – 62 degrees, and we saw what looked like the beginning of some bass beds. Weeds were slim, only just starting to grow in depth of 4 feet or less. We fished around 3 – 6 feet all day and didn’t catch a bite. Watched someone fishing a bit deeper catch a bass on a ned rig, but he said that was his only bite. Another friend had not caught any fish either. At least we had the chance to cast our rods and make sure everything worked alright, but it was a slow day for catching for us, as we never even saw a bass.

Although yesterday may have been an off day, the big fish are in there. At a tournament last weekend, it took nearly 25 lbs. to win a tournament, with 2nd place only ounces behind. We know a local angler who has caught five bass over six pounds this spring, too. Maybe next time we will find a big one or two ourselves.
